Southcoast Health Adds Two New Primary Care Providers Amid Doctor Shortage
If you haven’t had the need to switch or choose a primary care physician recently, you may not be aware of the crisis that exists on the SouthCoast. There is a very real shortage of PCPs. There are simply more patients in need of a primary care physician than there are openings for patients in search of one.
Many facilities on the SouthCoast are simply not accepting new patients for PCPs. Others are offering a spot on their waiting list. However, those waiting lists can be as long as 2,000 people deep.
Thankfully, Southcoast Health is aware of the issue and is addressing it by welcoming two new primary care physicians into the fold.
Heather Ferreira, FNP-C, and Shannon Houlihan, FNP-C are both now accepting patients in Wareham and Fall River.
Family Medicine Care Expands to Wareham
Ferreira joined Southcoast Health Family Medicine in Wareham. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Frontier Nursing University in Hyden, Kentucky. Ferreira will be providing medical care for individuals and families of all ages, offering everything from preventive care to ongoing management of chronic conditions.
Family medicine plays a key role in long-term wellness, supporting patients throughout childhood, adulthood, and beyond with personalized care close to home.

Internal Medicine Provider Now Seeing Patients in Fall River
Houlihan joins the Southcoast Health Internal Medicine team in Fall River. Houlihan completed her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Regis College of Nursing in Weston, Massachusetts.
Internal medicine providers focus on adult health, addressing a wide range of needs from routine checkups to more complex medical care. Houlihan will be caring for patients throughout greater Fall River, expanding access to high-quality internal medicine services.
Supporting Care At Every Stage of Life
Together, these two specialties help ensure Southcoast Health patients receive continuous, comprehensive support at every stage of life. From illness prevention to managing long-term medical needs, Ferreira and Houlihan will play an important role in keeping South Coast families healthy.
Southcoast Health says it is “delighted” to welcome both providers and reaffirm its commitment to exceptional service throughout the region.
