Two organizations are teaming up to help new mothers and their children. Women United, part of the United Way of Greater New Bedford, and WOMEN RUN Inc. are sponsoring a Mother's Day 5K Run and Walk, Sunday, May 14 in South Dartmouth.

The money raised will go to Women United programs to help new mothers and assist in the development of their children.

Paula Montgomery of Women United and Kyra Chomak of WOMEN RUN joined Townsquare Sunday this week to talk about the event.

"When Kyra and I first met, it was a natural, collaborative effort to team up together and positively impact the lives of women, families and girls in our community," Montgomery said.

She added that the Mother's Day run is not a road race, but rather a fun event that participants can run, walk or push a stroller along the 3.2 mile-course, while raising money to help others.

Your donations will help the United Way fund programs like Baby Bundles, providing a bag-full of supplies that new moms will need. Bright-by-Text offers free, early education tips to parents, and the Wash and Read program places books in laundromats and free books to take home to help get kids reading at a young age.

Chomak said the run and walk will start at 9 a.m. at the Dartmouth YMCA on Gulf Road, continue over the Padanaram Bridge, through the village, and then back over the bridge to the YMCA. No dogs are allowed this year.

Registration is $40 but you are guaranteed a free t-shirt if you register before May 1. Also, the price will increase after May 1. You can sign up online.

Townsquare Sunday is a weekly public affairs program heard every Sunday at 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. on WBSM.
