MBTA Rules For Bringing Your Dog to Boston on South Coast Rail
Here is something to ponder: many young adults who will hop on South Coast Rail to spend a day in Boston were not alive when the commuter rail project was conceived.
Has it been that long?
Now that the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority is finally delivering on its promise to connect the SouthCoast to Boston via rail, a whole new world has opened for many people who cannot easily get to the capital city.
Not everyone owns a car.

With spring in the air and flowers blooming on Boston Common, the Public Garden and along the Charles River, a walk along the Esplanade is just what the doctor ordered to shake the long winter blues, especially with someone you love, like your dog.

But are dogs allowed to ride South Coast Rail?
The short answer is yes and no.
"On MBTA Commuter Rail cars, service animals are always allowed, but non-service dogs are restricted, especially during peak hours," the MBTA says. "During off-peak hours, leashed non-service dogs may be allowed, at the discretion of Commuter Rail staff, and dogs are never permitted on seats."

Small domestic animals are permitted at all times but must be kept in a secure animal carrier, and should be kept on your lap if possible. There are restrictions for when larger dogs can ride the rails.
MBTA personnel reserve the right to restrict pet access as they see fit.
I would advise you to call the MBTA in advance when planning a trip with your dog. The MBTA has a website with "Rider Rules and Regulations." It is worth a visit, especially if you are unfamiliar with the transportation system.
