Snow tubing season will get underway in Rhode Island this weekend.

Hitting the slopes may be closer than you think to the SouthCoast.

If you've never been to Yawgoo Valley Ski Area in Exeter, Rhode Island, then you are missing out.

This was the first place I learned how to ski (and later snowboard) and it is home to some seriously awesome snow tubing.

I mean even Rob Gronkowski has gone there.

Of course when Gronk goes, he gets a private after hours tubing session. That will not be the case this weekend when snow tubing officially opens for everyone at Yawgoo on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

I know what you're thinking. Isn't it supposed to rain? Well yes, but the rain is coming late afternoon and into the evening, so you'll have plenty of daytime hours to tire yourself and the kids out with seven tracks of tubing.

But not too badly, there is a tow rope to bring you up to the top again and again.

This has been one of my favorite places to go in the winter. It's kind of a hidden gem of Rhode Island if you ask me.

And yes, you could head up north to the big ski mountains but Yawgoo is just one hour away from New Bedford. Closer than even Wachusett.

So if you don't have a whole day to commit to skiing, boarding or tubing but want to sneak in some winter fun this is your place.

Tubing opens Saturday, though Sunday is still on the fence depending on weather.

But stick with their Facebook to stay in the know.
