Having grown-up in the foothills of New York's Adirondack Mountains, I have an interest in this activity.  In the small town where the winter season seemed to last six months or more, ice skating was the one thing that made it bearable.

So may I suggest some open-air skating in the shadows of Gillette Stadium.  The Patriot Place rink is now open outside CBS Scene.  You can take to the ice each weekday evening beginning at 4, and on weekends at 11 a.m.  Exact hours and prices are available by clicking on to patriotplace.com.  There's also an observation deck for non-skaters.

If outdoor winter sports is not your cup of tea, Patriot Place also offers shopping, restaurants, a bowling alley, a movie theater and parking is free.
