ROCHESTER (WBSM) — A student at a Rochester elementary school has passed away, school officials announced today.

Old Rochester Regional School District Superintendent Michael S. Nelson said a Rochester Memorial School student died while on vacation with her family in Utah. A release referred to her passing as a “tragic accident” but did not provide any further information on the cause of death.

“This is devastating news for our school community,” Nelson said. “We offer our sincere condolences to the student's family, friends, classmates, and teachers during this unimaginable time. Our focus at this time is on supporting those who are grieving and we ask that the family's privacy be respected.”

Counseling Services Available to Students and Staff

“The school system is offering ongoing counseling and support services for students and staff across the school community,” Nelson said.

The Rochester Memorial School hosts students from preschool through sixth grade. Officials did not disclose the student’s grade level.
