Rhode Island’s Top 5 Mascots Need Your Votes
Five local schools are in the spotlight this week. Sports Illustrated is searching for the best high school mascot in the country and needs your help to select the number one from Rhode Island.
The top five have been announced, including my alma mater from East Providence. The Townies from EPHS are up against the Kilties from Mount Pleasant in Providence, Coventry High School Oakers, North Kingstown Skippers, and the Villa Novans from Woonsocket.
SBLive/High School on Sports Illustrated began the process a few months ago, selecting various top five lists for other states and asking fans to vote for their favorite to move on. Massachusetts' Salem High School took the win as the Witches received the most votes in October.
Other top five finalists included the Blue Bombardiers from Attleboro, Bourne Canalmen, Ashland Clockers and the Craftsmen from Bristol-Plymouth.
Votes can be cast online with the winner advancing to a NCAA tournament-style March Mascot Madness bracket. Each week, the competition, consisting of mascots from high schools across the country, will compete. Starting with 32 mascots in the first round, the field will be narrowed down to an elite eight, a final four, and finally the championship.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves. We need a top 32 first, which means we need to select a RI winner. So Townies, I'm looking at you. We need your help in voting E.P. (or your favorite mascot) into the tournament.
Fans can stay informed throughout the selection process by downloading the SBLive Sports app. Live updates will be sent to keep them up to date with the action.
Voting ends Saturday, February 1 at 11:59 p.m.
