One Dead After Two-Alarm Fire in New Bedford’s West End [VIDEO]

NEW BEDFORD - One person is dead after a violent fire in New Bedford's West End on Wednesday morning.

The fire was reported at around 7:20 a.m. in a single-family, two-story home at 176 Potter Street off of Shawmut Avenue. New Bedford Police and the Fire Department blocked access to Potter Street as firefighters battled the two-alarm fire for about two hours.

Deputy Fire Chief Paul Coderre tells WBSM News family members were in the house when the fire broke out. It's not known how many people were in the home at the time.

As the fire was being brought under control, firefighters entered the building to conduct a search and rescue operation. In the home, firefighters located the body of a 21-year-old male on the second floor. The person has not yet been identified. The victim's family has been notified.

Deputy Chief Coderre says there were no other injuries to family members or first responders.

The occupants of the home are being assisted by the American Red Cross in relocation efforts, as the home is uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office.

Fire apparatus from Fairhaven and Dartmouth were called into New Bedford to assist during the fire.
