An Old Rochester Regional High School teacher and her Early Childhood Education students are asking families with young children to "Touch a Truck" on May 17.

Teacher Elizabeth Kennedy and three students visited Townsquare Sunday to preview a fun event for young kids and tout their early education program.

"I've seen events like this in our area, and they are always pretty well attended," Kennedy said. "I wanted to find a way to incorporate what our students have learned throughout the year, and also have community partners involved as well."

Touch a Truck is happening Saturday, May 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the ORR campus at 135 Marion Road in Mattapoisett. Admission is free. Rain date is May 18.

The idea is to enlist town departments and private companies to provide vehicles, along with spokespeople to explain to children what they do and why it's important.

"We'll have a lot of different vehicles," student Mallory Henesey said. "There will be an ambulance, police cruisers and motorcycles, plus farm tractors, a bus, lawn care vehicles and tractor trailers."

Student Beverly Morse said they were still speaking with the fire department about getting a fire truck there as well.

Organizers sponsor an annual book drive every winter to provide books and gloves to a local Head Start program. Kennedy would be delighted to get an early start on the book drive at the Touch a Truck event.

"If you have any gently used or new books you would like to share with us, we're starting our collection now," she said.

The organizers say there will be lots of fun things to do at the event as well.
