Friday Night Lights is a weekly feature on Fun 107 where we spotlight a SouthCoast high school football game, including an article written by a student from the home team. This week's student is Justin Meyer, a Business Technology student at Old Colony High School. This week, Justin's Cougars host the Upper Cape Rams at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 1 at Old Colony's Rochester campus.

This Friday night, Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School will face off
against Upper Cape Cod Regional Vocational Technical High School in this year’s Homecoming game.

“We are pumped up from our spirit week and excited for our Homecoming game,” said Cougars coach Brandon Mendez. “Upper Cape is always one of our toughest league opponents and we look forward to a hard-fought battle with them again this year.”

Old Colony’s team is led by senior captain linebackers Raymond Thibault and Joseph
Rubini, as well as senior offensive backs Patrick Quin and Jacob Legault. These players will
make an impact on both sides of the ball with their physical play and leadership.

These two teams have competed against each other in the past. In fact, their previous confrontation took place last year at Old Colony’s first night game on Oliveira Field. In
that game, Old Colony beat Upper Cape on the last play by a score of 20-18.

Unfortunately, there was no Homecoming game last year, due to the pandemic. This year it is time to play the Homecoming game once again, and based on a poll, Old Colony’s school-wide consensus is one of resounding excitement to finally be back.

This year, the dynamic between the two teams will be very interesting. Old Colony is led
by a physical defense and by junior quarterback Matt McGuiggan, who threw four touchdowns and zero interceptions in three starts last year.

Will Old Colony be able to defend their status as winners against Upper Cape this year? Time shall tell; however, Mr. Mendez is very confident in securing victory.

“We will look to our senior leaders to lead the way in our Homecoming battle and hope to raise our victory flag after the game on Friday night,” he said.
