NORTON — A 19-year-old man was hospitalized with serious burns after his home caught fire in Norton on Sunday morning.

The Norton Fire Department stated in a release that fire crews responded to the reported fire at a single-family home on North Washington Street at around 9 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke on all floors, with the source of the blaze in the basement, according to the department.

A 19-year-old man was found in the basement suffering from a serious leg burn.

The man was removed from the home and treated by first responders before being taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton for further medical care, the department noted in the statement.

It took Norton firefighters around 10 minutes to put out the blaze, with help from Taunton Fire and North Attleboro Fire crews.

Norton Fire Chief Shawn Simmons noted in the statement that firefighters cleared the scene at around 11:30 a.m.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing — but the department likely believes it started from a wood stove, as Simmons warned residents about wood stove safety.

“It only takes a few seconds for a fire to get out of control,” he said. “We ask residents to make sure their wood stoves are in good working order, and that they take great care when using them.”

Residents are also reminded to check that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are operational, as the incidence of indoor fires increases in cold weather.

Station coverage during the fire was provided by Easton and Mansfield Fire Departments.
