A new algebra program was announced during Monday's School Committee meeting.

The pilot math program will be implemented at New Bedford High School this fall with help from the University of San Diego's Mobile Technology Learning Center.

MTLC President Scott Himelstein says although the program will use new technology devices, it's up to the teachers to make it their own.

Much of the cost for the pilot program has been covered by well known local philanthropist Dr. Irwin Jacobs. Dr. Jacobs has donated $301,000 that will help supply the new devices and allow for professional development over the summer for teachers to learn the new program.

Around 250 freshman students will be randomly selected to take part in the pilot program. All students in the program will receive a take home mobile device and engage in a blended learning Algebra 1 course model.
