Gomes was found in his vehicle on Belleville Avenue early Monday after a report of shots fired in the area of Tallman Street and North Front Street.

It is believed Gomes lost consciousness while attempting to drive himself to the hospital, the D.A.’s Office said. He was pronounced dead after being taken by EMS to St. Luke’s Hospital.

WBSM records indicate Monteiro has a history of criminal activity. He was arrested in April 2021 and charged with trafficking cocaine after police seized nearly 300 grams of cocaine from a County Street apartment.

Police said that at that time, Monteiro also had two open cases for narcotics distribution out of New Bedford Third District Court, charged in September of 2020 for distributing crack cocaine and again in March of 2021 for distribution of oxycontin.
