A New Bedford woman suffered severe head trauma after a freak accident over the weekend.

New Bedford Police tell WBSM News the 27-year-old city woman was a passenger in a van travelling south on Purchase Street from Mount Pleasant Street Saturday evening.

The woman and the male driver had been in an argument when the woman stuck her head out of the window while the car was still in motion. As the van was passing a parked tractor-trailer truck near Friendly Donuts on Purchase street, the woman's head struck the rear of the trailer.

Police say there was a significant amount of blood loss.

The woman was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where she is still alive. Her exact condition is unknown.

Police continue to investigate the accident.
