New Bedford West Hill Road Fire Hospitalizes Four
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A fire broke out at a two-story home on New Bedford’s West Hill Road Tuesday and hospitalized four people.
According to the New Bedford Fire Department, crews received multiple 911 calls at 7:37 a.m. for a fire at 145 West Hill Road.
When crews arrived, they found smoke and fire coming from the first and second floors of the building.
The department said that all six residents who were inside were able to evacuate the building before firefighters arrived due to the working smoke detectors and sprinklers in the house.
According to Deputy Fire Chief Brian Medeiros, one person was taken to the intensive care unit at St. Luke's Hospital for injuries while three others received care for possible smoke inhalation.
The person taken the to the intensive care unit remains in critical condition.
Due to heavy smoke and fire damage, the building is uninhabitable.
All six residents are receiving aid from the American Red Cross of Massachusetts, according to the department.
The department said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
