I wish I was lying, but facts are facts.

Known for their no-holds-barred rap style, outrageous antics, and viral videos that push every envelope possible, the infamous hip-hop group Waraq is heading straight from the 401 to the 508.

The self-proclaimed “most hated rap group in the world,” hailing from Warwick, Rhode Island, will be making a pit stop in the heart of downtown New Bedford on Saturday, June 14th, at Smashed NB on Pleasant Street from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. Expect five hours of photo ops, meet-and-greets, and unfiltered hype as they help fuel one of the spiciest food challenges on the SouthCoast (and possibly beyond).

Who is Waraq?

Let's just say they're often polarizing but impossible to ignore and have racked up millions of views with their unfiltered freestyles, DIY-style music videos, and chaotic personas that have built a cult-like following (and equally vocal critics). Whether you love them or loathe them, the group continues to find ways to go viral, armed with hammers, hot dogs, and rather unorthodox energy.

“The owner (Brandon Sadeck) reached out to them (Waraq), and we were shocked to hear that they had heard about the hot chicken hype here in New Bedford, all the way in Rhode Island," Chef Rafael Flores explained.

401 Takes over 508

The group is rolling through just in time to rally around the restaurant’s infamous hot chicken challenge, which now boasts a jaw-dropping $3,500 prize. The challenge? Six ultra-spicy chicken tenders. Five minutes. No drinks, no breaks, and no mercy.

Rafael hinted at trying to convince one of the Waraq members into stepping up to the plate. “I'm going to gas one of them up,” he laughed. “It’ll be legendary if they do it on camera.”

While it’s still unclear whether Waraq plans to shoot a music video or one of their signature social skits while in New Bedford, anyone familiar with the crew knows that when they’re in town, antics aren’t far behind. So if you see a cowboy hat, a camo shirt, or someone with a hammer and a hot dog, don’t be alarmed, that’s just Waraq being Waraq.
