New Bedford has recently become a breeding ground for success and when it comes to cookies, there's a couple of local twins who have baked their way to the top.

Aria and Maya Christian are twin sisters from New Bedford who now reside in New York. They have created a company called Twins That Cook and it started out as a "quarantine dream" that finally become a reality with their baking expertise. Big-time celebrities such as Trevor Noah from Comedy Central's The Daily Show as well as Mario Lopez, who recently invited the twins onto Access Hollywood, have been requesting these cookies. Clearly, they were impressed with the baked goods.

"We use brown butter in the cookies," the Christian sisters said. "It's a brown butter base to give an intense and beautiful color to the cookie. Any cookie made without butter is heading into the vegan realm."

Years after graduating college, the sister reunited to form a business that quickly took off.

"We're so happy that everyone has been so supportive of us," Maya said. "It's amazing, rewarding, and we're happy to be here."

The Christian sisters have been overwhelmed (in the best way ever) with love and support from their home city.

"New Bedford has been incredibly supportive, the messages, the online ordering, it's been so amazing and we will continue to put New Bedford on the map," Aria said. "It's important to remember where you're from and also acknowledge where you're from. Shout out to New Bedford, we love you all."

Growing up, there used to be a pastry shop on Union Street where they would get cupcakes. Living in Brooklyn, the sisters are deprived from the Portuguese food and baked goods they grew up with and love.

"There are no Portuguese bakeries here," they said. "There's no Portuguese or Cape Verdean community, or linguica, so every time we go home, we have to get cheese rolls and linguica rolls and sweet bread to fill that void."

One New Bedford bakery stands out above the rest for the sisters as an inspiration and favorite go-to place.

"The Baker Downtown is the best," they said. "It wasn't there when we were growing up, but it's one bakery in New Bedford we love the most. Everything there is fire."

Success stories like that of the Christian sisters add value to the SouthCoast that can only come from raw talent. Twins That Cook is growing bigger by the day and when it comes to unique cookies with a little bit of New Bedford flair, I suggested a chourico or linguica cookie that tastes much better than it sounds. Best of luck to the Christians in all their accomplishments and endeavors. You've made the SouthCoast proud.
