New Bedford Trash Crew Turns Dirty Work Into Daily Joy
They're not just hauling trash, they're lifting a city.
Brandon Gomes knows what it takes to keep a city running, and more importantly, what it takes to keep a team inspired. As the Route Supervisor for Capitol Waste Services in New Bedford, he proudly refers to his crew as “New Bedford’s A-Team," and after talking to him, it’s easy to see why.
These aren’t just guys tossing bags in the back of a truck. Many of them have been working together for nearly a decade, pushing through challenges like COVID-19 with little recognition and even fewer raises. Now, thanks to a unionized contract and better pay, morale is high and the pride is even higher.
“These guys enjoy the work they do,” Gomes said. “You gotta respect it because let’s face it, nobody likes the smell or to deal with trash.”
The Work Is Tough, But the Impact Is Greater
For most people, being a sanitation worker might not top the dream job list, but for this team, it's a meaningful career. The work is local, well-paying, and best of all, it connects them to the very community they serve.
“You get to see residents and their kids show real gratitude for the job you do,” Gomes shared.

It’s that connection that drives them to go above and beyond. From helping elderly neighbors carry groceries, to buying Christmas gifts for kids on their route, this crew is showing that the job is more than just curbside collection, it’s about community.
A Day in Their (Heavy-Duty) Shoes
Gomes wishes people could experience a ride-along to truly understand the demands and decisions that come with the job
“People are quick to judge the noise or the mess, but I’d love for them to see firsthand what a day in the life of a sanitation worker looks like. Honestly, it could be a good TV show," he said.
And maybe it would be; especially with a cast of characters that include a dancing Grinch, a Halloween alien and a constantly grooving team member who keeps the kids waving from their windows.
“The horns, the dancing, kids love it," Gomes said. "And it’s just one more way we give back.”
To the Crew, From Their Leader
Gomes beams with pride as he talks about the men behind the machines.
“Keep up the great work you do. I couldn’t ask for a better crew, drivers or shakers," he said.
Because when it comes to cleaning up the city, and lifting its spirits, Capitol Waste’s New Bedford team is doing it with heart, hustle and the perfect recipe of hard work and humanity.
