New Bedford’s Tia Maria’s Scores Liquor License and Brunch Is About to Get Boozy
Something exciting is brewing at Tia Maria’s European Café in Downtown New Bedford.
On Tuesday, July 29, owner Jessica Coelho Arruda secured a full liquor license, opening the door to a whole new beverage experience at the beloved North Water Street spot known for its Portuguese roots, strong coffee game and cozy brunches.
The Story Behind the Liquor License
What began as a casual inquiry about expanding beyond beer and wine became a golden opportunity when the City of New Bedford discovered it had surplus licenses available. When the Licensing Board reached out to gauge interest among current beer and wine holders, Arruda didn’t hesitate.
“I said, ‘Say no more... I’m on it,’” she said. “Within 12 hours, I had everything submitted.”
What to Expect From the New Drink Menu
Pending final approval from the state’s Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission, the license will allow Tia Maria’s to offer a full array of spirits: something customers (myself included) have been requesting for years. Think espresso martinis, Bloody Marys and seasonal spiked lattes, all complementing the café’s existing brunch and lunch dishes.

Arruda emphasized that while the offerings are expanding, the café’s hours will remain the same, and the goal is to enhance, not overhaul, the current experience.
“We’re not trying to become a bar,” she said. “We’re just giving people more of what they already love... just with a little extra buzz.”
The new drink menu, targeted for a fall appearance, will feature both classics and house-made specials designed to complement the café’s culture and cuisine; and yes, there will be a creamy decaf espresso martini on deck, Arruda’s personal favorite.
What’s Next for Tia Maria’s Café
Looking ahead, she’s even considering fun add-ons like paint nights or private events, noting that the updated bar space offers endless potential.
“This is a game-changer,” she said. “It levels the playing field and helps us stay competitive while staying true to who we are.”
A Toast to the Future
As renovations wrap and the new lettering shines on the storefront (proudly hung by Diamond Signs), it’s clear that Tia Maria’s is gearing up for its next chapter with a splash of tequila sunrise.
