When the invitation came to visit Taylor Elementary School in New Bedford for Read Across America Day, I didn’t hesitate. There’s something special about stepping into a classroom full of curious second graders, especially when the day also celebrates the birthday (week) of the one and only Dr. Seuss.

When I arrived, Mrs. Primo’s second-grade class welcomed me with big smiles and even bigger energy. Then came the decision-making moment: the teacher handed me six different books and the students voted on which one I should read.

After a quick classroom debate, the class chose Buffalo Fluffalo.

A Story About Being Yourself

As I started reading, the room filled with giggles and wide-eyed reactions as Buffalo tried puffing himself up to look bigger and tougher than he really was.

I'm sure my goofy voice impressions of what I assumed Buffalo would have sounded like helped.

As the story unfolded, it hit me that this wasn’t just a fun kids’ book. The message about being yourself landed a little closer to home than I expected.

A Lesson That Hit Home

By the time I finished the final page, I realized I connected with Buffalo more than I imagined.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve believed that authenticity is what makes people stand out. I’ve never felt embarrassed about being myself, and I’ve always believed that being original is what brings real happiness.

If there’s one lesson worth sharing with a room full of second graders on Read Across America Week, it’s this: the thing that makes you different is often the thing that makes you special, and you don't have to "puff out your chest" to impress anyone. Just be yourself.

Thanks for having me, Taylor School!

Five Things We Love About Jeff Kinney and His Massachusetts Bookstore

He has sold over 300 million copies of his Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, yet author Jeff Kinney still lives a pretty lowkey life.
The husband and father of two is also a local bookstore owner, running an independent shop in Plainville, MA that is as unlikely as it's name.
