3 Busy New Bedford Streets Will Shut Down Nightly Into August
As New Bedford's baby version of the big dig continues, there is an update to report regarding the Route 18 Rehabilitation Project. You may be surprised about which major streets will be closed nightly over the next month or more.
Why Crews are Closing These Roads
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is announcing that there will soon be overnight closures on three major streets in and around the project. The road closures are necessary to give workers safe access to effectively install steel beams.
When Do the New Bedford Road Closures Start
The street closures will go into effect beginning this Sunday night, according to a statement from MassDOT.

Which New Bedford Streets Will Be Closed
The following streets will be closed and detours will be implemented:
- Route 18 (both North and South)
- Purchase Street
- County Street
How Long Will the Street Closures Last
These streets will be closed near the worksite beginning each night at 7 p.m. and will reopen each morning at 5 a.m. These streets will continue to be closed every night into the month of August until this particular part of the project is completed and the access is no longer necessary.
What This Means for Drivers
Hopefully, the timing of these closures will minimize impact on traffic. The detours will most likely give the most grief to evening drivers heading into and through the work zone. Morning and afternoon commuters will, for the most part, dodge these inconveniences over the next month or so.
The entire rehabilitation project is expected to be measured in years before completion.
