How the Shannon Program Helps At-Risk New Bedford Get Back on Track

This week's South Coast Health Community Spotlight shines on the New Bedford Shannon Program. It is managed by North Star Learning Centers in partnership with the New Bedford Police Department.

What Is the Shannon Program?

Program Director Renee Ledbetter gave us insight into this important New Bedford violence prevention and intervention program for youth ages 10 through 24. The Shannon Program is not just for youth involved in gangs. It is designed for any young person who may need motivation, consistent support, and someone who can help guide them toward a more successful future.

"It is for kids who need a little boost," Ledbetter said. "For kids who need a success plan and someone to help them see it through."

How the Program Creates Real Success Stories

Ledbetter shared stories of kids who joined the program years ago.

"They came through our program at a young age and they were tough. They made it through high school and got involved in gang activity," she said. "Since joining the program, though, they are out of the gangs, they have jobs, and they are trying to stay out of trouble. They are focusing on working on themselves so they can have a better life."

What Career Paths Have Participants Taken

Ledbetter highlighted some of the real-life outcomes of participants. One teen earned a commercial driver’s license and now drives trucks. Another became a licensed welder and works full-time.

"Anything they are able to do that helps them sustain and keeps them out of the activity that was getting them in trouble," Ledbetter said. "You celebrate those wins, but you also have to stay realistic and follow up to help them keep the momentum going."
