We love to shine the spotlight on local people doing great things as often as we can. We could all use some good news during this pandemic.

We are thrilled to share that the New Bedford Fire Department has announced that 12 of its firefighters have been honored by the Heroic Awards Committee through Governor Charlie Baker's Office. The following New Bedford fire fighters received the nomination from Acting Chief Scott Kruger.

  • Firefighter Joshua Charbonneau
  • Lt. Kevin Cormier
  • Lt. Derek DaCosta
  • Lt. Michael Dillon
  • Captain Robert Ferreira
  • Captain Kurt Houghton
  • Firefighter Robert Kirby
  • Firefighter Richard McCue
  • Lt. Antonino Miraglia
  • Lt. Christopher Mount
  • Firefighter Steven Mourao
  • Firefighter Matthew Perry
During normal times, the firefighters would have been honored by Governor Charlie Baker at the Annual Firefighter of the Year Awards Ceremony. The event will still happen next week, but it will be conducted virtually instead of in person.
The good news is that anyone in the Greater New Bedford area can watch the ceremony on a Facebook Live stream or by clicking here and watching it on YouTube. The virtual event will happen this coming Monday morning, March 8, at 10:30 a.m.
If you miss the live feed, the ceremony will be archived here.
The New Bedford Fire Department says it will schedule an in-person ceremony when public health conditions improve.
A big thank you to all of these brave firefighters for their demonstration of bravery and true heroism. Further thanks to the families of these firefighters who support their loved ones in their dedication to putting their lives on the line to keep other families safe.
