Erin go bragh! March is here and that means St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner. One local band is getting the celebration started early with some nearby performances where you can sing and dance to Irish music.

New Bedford's own The Pourmen is a popular group with a signature sound.

"I would say we're on the rock side of the Irish music. If I were to compare us to a band, I would say the Flogging Molly or the Dropkick Murphys," band manager Rick Bennett said.

The band was formed in January of 2013 and since then has had a variety of bandmates. The current group has been playing together for three years and features artists all from Massachusetts.

Over the 12 years the band has been together, it has played at hundreds of venues across New England including breweries, festivals and pubs.

The Pourmen Have a Busy Month Ahead

The month of March is always a busy one for the band. "

We usually call it the St. Paddy's Onslaught," Bennett said.

The Pourmen kicked off the Onslaught this past weekend in New Bedford and have a few nearby performances coming up this weekend.

Fans of The Pourmen can head to Providence on Friday for a show at Alchemy Music Hall, drive to Hyannis Saturday and enjoy music and a pint at Cape Cod Beer and cap off the weekend with the whole family at Narragansett Beer in Providence.

Family Friendly Event in Providence

"That's a real family-friendly event," Bennett said. "It's all ages and it's Sunday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m."

In addition to their music, The Pourmen will be joined by Irish step dancers and fiddle players at Narragansett Beer.

"It's great when you're singing an original song and people are singing the words with you," Bennett said. "That's something as a songwriter that is great where people actually appreciate and like your work."

Boston on St. Patrick's Day

"On St. Paddy's Day itself we're playing at Ned Devine's which is in Quincy Market in Boston, so any time you're in Boston on St. Patrick's Day, you know it's gonna be awesome," Bennett said.

"Especially around this time of year, everybody's Irish," Bennett added. "Everybody's happy, everyone is vibing and having a good time and the more people are there the more we thrive on it as well."

If you haven't experienced St. Paddy's in Boston, it's an experience and certainly worth the drive.

"Obviously you're celebrating Irish heritage, but it's also a great day to party with your friends," Bennett said.

Walk Down Memory Lane

I had a chance to meet The Pourmen years ago when I was hosting The Rhode Show in Rhode Island. Now, the band members have changed over the years (and I'm out of the sling), but the great music remains.
