New Commander Named for New Bedford’s North End Police Station
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — There’s a new commander of the New Bedford Police Department’s North End station, as Captain Paul DaCosta has taken over the lead role at Station 3.
“After being here for some time, it became clear that Station 3 had a significant vacancy that needed strong leadership,” New Bedford Police Chief Jason Thody told WBSM. “Captain DaCosta has done a commendable job at Headquarters and brings 24 years of experience as a police officer, including over seven years serving as a Captain. I have full confidence in his abilities and believe he will do great things leading Station 3.”

Why the Station 3 Command Position Remained Vacant
Captain DaCosta replaces retired commander Captain Robert Holmes, who stepped down in mid-2025. The position remained vacant ever since, with the New Bedford Police Union calling on Mayor Jon Mitchell in September to appoint a new Division Commander for Station 3.

“The responsibilities of this critical role did not retire with (Holmes); they have instead been distributed among the lieutenants and sergeants of each platoon,” the union wrote on its Facebook page back on September 22. “These additional duties have been assumed without benefit of promotion, additional support, or financial compensation.”

“With a captain in place, the station benefits from consistent oversight, strategic direction, and a clear chain of command,” the union wrote. “The captain plays a vital role in ensuring the station operates smoothly – administratively, operationally, and in terms of personnel management.”
Now, the North End station will have that leadership in place in Captain DaCosta, a move that was applauded by the New Bedford City Councilors whose wards are serviced by the station.
City Councilors React to the Appointment
“Please welcome Captain DaCosta,” Ward 1 Councilor Leo Choquette posted on Facebook. “I look forward to working with him, as he protects Wards 1, 2, and 3.”
“Captain DaCosta brings experience, and a strong commitment to public safety,” Ward 3 Councilor Shawn Oliver posted. “I look forward to working collaboratively with him and the dedicated officers at Station 3 as we continue strengthening community police relations and addressing the needs of our neighborhoods. Welcome to the West End, Captain, and thank you for your service.”
New Ward 2 Councilor Scott Pemberton also offered congratulations to DaCosta.
“We all wish Captain DaCosta the best of luck in his new assignment,” Pemberton posted. “God Bless and keep safe.”
