Police Investigating 14th Incident of Shots Fired in West End
NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford Police spokesman Lieutenant Nathaniel Rodriguez has confirmed to WBSM News shots were fired Friday in an area that has been rocked by gunfire throughout this year.
The incident happened shortly after noontime.
Police say the shots were fired in the area of Chestnut Street, and more details will be available as the investigation continues. Unconfirmed reports indicate it was in the area of Chestnut and Campbell Streets specifically. Rodriguez reports no injuries or property damage as of yet.
It marks the 14th incident of shots fired in the West End neighborhood since the start of 2018.
Most recently, two incidents of shots fired occurred in the area of Linden and Reynolds Streets on August 10 and August 13, with both incidents detected by Shotspotter and confirmed by New Bedford Police.
On August 8, a man arrived at the St. Luke's Hospital emergency room before 9 p.m. on Wednesday. The man apparently told police he had been shot in the back near the 200-block of Cedar Street.
On Saturday, August 4, New Bedford Police found a shell casing in the 0-block of Parker Street at around 6:35 p.m. after a bystander reported hearing several gunshots. No property damage or injuries were reported.
On Tuesday, July 17, ShotSpotter, the city's gunshot detection system, alerted police to a number of possible shots fired in the area of 245 Cedar Street. Apparent bullet damage was found in a home and a vehicle in the area.
On July 15, a man was shot multiple times in the 400-block of Cottage Street.
On June 12, ShotSpotter detected possible gunfire in the 100-block of Campbell Street. Police found evidence that confirmed shots had been fired.
Police found property damage believed to be caused by bullets following a reported shooting on June 4 in the 80-block of Parker Street.
The residence at 66 Robeson Street was damaged by a bullet back on March 11.
On February 20, a woman was shot “near the torso area,” according to New Bedford Police, in the area of 130 Chestnut Street. The victim was transported to an area hospital and later released.
On February 1, there was a report of shots fired in the area of 250 Summer Street, near Pope Street. Shortly after the shooting, witnesses reported the house at 250 Summer Street was tagged with graffiti reading “WOMAN BEATER” and “GANG GANG.”
On January 10, a bullet entered the dining room of second floor apartment at 69 Locust Street. The next night, there were reports of shots fired in the area of Pope and Summer Streets.
