New Bedford Police Rolling Out Bicycle Patrols on City Streets
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford residents will soon see a different kind of police patrol on city streets.
Bicycle Patrols Are Coming to New Bedford
The New Bedford Police Department announced today that officers are now being certified to patrol on bicycles, saying it will enable officers “to increase visibility, enhance accessibility, and foster stronger connections with the community.”

The department said the initiative reflects the department’s commitment to community policing.
Community Benefits of Officers on Bikes
“When our officers are on bikes, they are more accessible to the community,” Chief Jason Thody said. “Bike patrol combines the benefits of foot patrol, such as approachability and community connection, with the ability to cover greater distances and respond quickly to emergencies. It also enhances officer wellness by promoting both physical activity and outdoor exposure. Today, an officer’s workplace is the very streets they ride on.”
Introducing E-Bikes to City Patrols
It’s not just traditional bicycles. Some officers will also be patrolling on e-bikes, like Officer Tony Pereira has already been doing in the North End.

The department said there was a “strong response” from officers who wanted to be trained for bicycle patrols, and that it plans on offering more certification sessions.
Expanding the Police Bicycle Fleet
In addition, the department is adding five new bicycles to its existing fleet of 10 through grant funding, and will continue to add more in the future.
