Pastors Strive to Improve New Bedford Hispanic Community [TOWNSQUARE SUNDAY]
A group of Hispanic pastors in New Bedford is looking to become more active in the city of New Bedford and better serve their communities. They have formed the Pastoral Coalition of New England, which was incorporated in 2017.
Pastor Victor Carrion said its New Bedford members represent more than 40 storefront churches in the city and surrounding communities. Pastor Carrion said their purpose is to promote unity, and more effectively serve the Hispanic community.
The group hopes to establish a platform that allows churches, local government, and different agencies to channel information, programs and support to the Hispanic community.
Speaking this week on Townsquare Sunday, Pastor Carrion said the coalition's leadership has had successful meetings with Mayor Jon Mitchell, former Police Chief Joseph Cordeiro, and Health Dept. Director Damon Chaplain. They have also met several times with Rep. Antonio Cabral of New Bedford.
The group is still mapping out its goals, but is already at work reaching out to the Hispanic community about COVID-19 and information about the vaccine. Other topics include education, reducing violence and drug use, and poverty.
Townsquare Sunday is a public affairs program heard every Sunday morning at 6 and 11 a.m. on 1420 WBSM. The program highlights organizations and individuals working to make Greater New Bedford a better place to live and work.
