NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — Some early-morning loud noises had New Bedford residents concerned, and they still remain a bit of a mystery.

Multiple loud booms were reportedly heard in the city’s near North End at around 3 a.m. Monday.

WBSM was provided with screenshots from a neighborhood app that described the noise as “very loud bang/booms” heard three separate times, likening it to a “large firework” or “like a cannon being fired or dynamite going off.”

They were said to be heard in the area of Mt. Pleasant Street and Sawyer Street, as well as on Coggeshall Street and County Street. Other folks in the near North End reported hearing them, too.

WBSM’s news anchor Kate Robinson, who lives in the area, said the noises were “loud” and “annoying” and that they woke her up.

According to New Bedford Police spokesperson Lt. Scott Carola, there were reports that came into the police dispatch at around 3 a.m. today.

“One reported fireworks and another reported possible gunshots,” he said. “Officers could find no evidence of shots fired.”

As of now, there’s no definitive answer as to what caused the booms.

“I'm thinking it was fireworks,” Carola said. “It's right around that season.”
