NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — The eight-year-old boy killed this morning in an apparent murder-suicide in New Bedford has now been identified, and his cause of death revealed.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, the boy has been identified as Dante Hazard.

The D.A.’s Office, Fall River Police, New Bedford Police and Massachusetts State Police had been actively investigating the disappearance of the boy’s mother, Lisa Hazard, in March of 2019.

About two and a half weeks ago, detectives executed a search warrant at 1643 Phillips Road in New Bedford, the home of Dante Hazard and his father, George Scott III.

Scott was a person of interest in the disappearance of Lisa Hazard. A neighbor told WBSM that it appeared Scott’s vehicle had been taken as part of the search.

The D.A.’s Office said that at about 8:09 a.m. this morning, New Bedford Police received a request for a wellness check by a relative who had been unable to reach Scott.

“Upon entering the residence, police this morning located the deceased bodies of both individuals,” the D.A.’s Office said in a release. “It appears from the evidence recovered at the scene to be a murder-suicide. Mr. Scott appears to have killed the boy with a sharp object before taking his own life."

"We are awaiting the medical examiner’s confirmation of these and other details," the D.A.'s Office said.

Scott, a former Boston Red Sox prospect, was the son of Boston Red Sox All-Star George “Boomer” Scott.
