NEW BEDFORD - A New Bedford man is arrested after crashing his all-terrain vehicle into a police cruiser.

New Bedford Police observed an operator on an ATV illegally operating the vehicle on city streets in the area of Acushnet and Howard Avenues at around 7:41 p.m. on Sunday.

As police approached the rider, the man started the vehicle and attempted to flee, striking a police cruiser in the process. The operator then fled on foot. He was apprehended after a brief foot chase.

Police arrested the man, Dymitri Sherman, 24, of 117 Sylvia Street, Apt. 3, New Bedford. Sherman is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, using a recreational vehicle on a public way, using an unregistered recreational vehicle on a public way, helmet violation, failure to stop for police, and failure to report an address change to the registry.
