A New Bedford man is the latest to prove that hard work pays off if you set your mind to it.

Over at 789 Mount Pleasant Street in New Bedford, adjacent to the former Billy Boy Candies, is a brand-new barber shop with a promise to the community- to give great haircuts/lineups and to keep their prices low.

It's called Senhor Barbeiro, a Portuguese barber shop that translates to Mr. Barber, who is 41-year-old David Vieira and speaks the language fluently. Born and raised in the city and a graduate of New Bedford High, Vieira was destined to make his hometown proud.

"I've been open for the past five weeks now and I love what I can bring to the table," Vieira said, "This is my first time owning my own barber shop, but it's always been a dream of mine. The way I see it, you'll always need a haircut, no matter what. Regardless of how bad the economy is, I'll always keep my prices low to help out my community. This is where I was raised and these are my people."

Vieira recently graduated from Rob Roy Academy to obtain his barber license, but has been practicing and cutting hair for over 10 years. He offers senior citizens discounts and provides "the works" which includes a haircut, lineup, and eyebrows for only $25. There's also free Wi-Fi and TV for the kids to keep them distracted and entertained while giving them a cut.

His barber shop is also attached to a beauty salon called Haircutters Corner where he shares the building with Olga Wilbur who moved to New Bedford back in 1977 from Portugal and has been cutting hair for over 50 years.

"We work as friends and help each other out," Vieira said, "It's a team effort and when you come to see us, we're more than just a barber and stylist, we're great listeners. Our customers come to us to relax and vent and whatever is said stays here and never gets repeated."

Senhor Barbeiro is easy to get to right off the highway and has plenty of parking. While walk-ins are welcomed, it's best to call ahead to make an appointment at 774-263-6233.
