NEW BEDFORD — A 55-year-old New Bedford man has been sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted Tuesday of second degree murder in the 2018 slaying of Allan Monteiro with a machete.

James Andrews will have the possibility of parole after 22 years, according to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.

Andrews stabbed Monteiro to death with a machete at his 345 Cottage St. apartment after Monteiro complained about a disturbance caused by Andrews watching porn and listening to loud music at 5 a.m. on Aug. 9, 2018, the D.A.'s office said.

According to the D.A.'s office, Monteiro had let Andrews stay at his family home because he needed somewhere to stay.

Several of Monteiro's immediate family members were in the apartment at the time.

The victim suffered severe stab wounds to his face, chest and arms, shoulder, and hand.

Andrews then left and got rid of the clothes he was wearing during the assault, along with the knife and his phone, before his arrest later that afternoon.

He was convicted by a jury in Fall River Superior Court after a five-day trial and one day of jury deliberations, the D.A.'s office said.

"I am thankful the jury held the defendant accountable for the brutal murder of his friend," Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn said. "Sadly the victim and his family had treated the defendant like a family member over the years and even had let him stay at the family residence because he had no place to go."

"The defendant was watching porn on his computer and waking everyone up due to the excessive noise," Quinn added. "When the victim confronted him, he hacked and stabbed him to death with a machete. The defendant is a violent career criminal who needs to be kept off the street for the rest of the life."
