NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — The City of New Bedford is making its Independence Day weekend fireworks bigger and better this year as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday on Friday, July 3.

For the first time, the City’s fireworks display over the harbor will be synchronized to a playlist of patriotic songs that will play not on speakers throughout downtown New Bedford, but the music will also extend beyond the waterfront.

That's because WBSM is helping to bolster the reach of the star-spangled soundtrack by simulcasting it on 1420 AM and 99.5 FM. That way, anyone within viewing distance of the fireworks display can still enjoy them in time with the music.

Free Concerts and Downtown Entertainment

The fireworks display is slated for 9 p.m., but there is plenty of reason to get downtown well before that, as the City’s Summer Sound Series of free Friday night concerts will be underway.

The July 3 concert will feature two bands, Morrissey Blvd and Autumn Drive, performing on the Purchase Street stage at 6 p.m. The music will wrap up by 8:30 p.m. so folks can get closer to the waterfront to view the fireworks.

“We invite residents and visitors to come early, visit downtown and enjoy this year’s celebration,” Mayor Jon Mitchell said. “The annual fireworks display is one of the City’s signature summer events and draws people from across Greater New Bedford to explore and enjoy everything the City has to offer.”

There will also be Cirque de Light circus entertainers downtown, featuring “eye-catching juggling and hula hoop tricks,” according to a release, and the New Bedford Art Museum’s Artmobile will also be downtown.

Where to Find Free Parking

Free parking will be available at the Elm Street and Zeiterion parking garages, as well as the Downtown YMCA.

How Do Fireworks Get Their Colors?

Besides being a fun fact to impress your friends during the finale, knowing what makes fireworks work is a reminder of just how intertwined our daily lives are with Earth’s natural resources. Some of these minerals are considered critical commodities, meaning they’re vital to modern life and can be difficult to source.
So the next time you see a shimmering white sparkle or a deep red bloom over the Mohawk River, you’ll know: there's real science, and some pretty rare elements behind all that beauty.
It all comes down to chemistry. When fireworks are launched, metallic compounds, also called mineral elements, are heated to really hot temperatures. And as they burn, they emit specific colors of light.
The more complex the mix, the more dazzling the display.
