New Bedford Man Arrested for Allegedly Threatening to Shoot Another Man With Stolen Gun
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford Police took a stolen firearm off the streets this past weekend and arrested a man they said reportedly threatened to shoot someone.
According to police, officers responded to a residence on Illinois Street in the city’s North End on Saturday, June 17 at about 7:30 p.m. on a report of a man with a gun. They said that upon arriving, Officers Hank Turgeon and Alan Lord observed the suspect entering a nearby vehicle and stopped the man, identified as Jarred Chumack, 35, of New Bedford.
“It was reported that Chumack had made his way to the residence to confront a male regarding a fight that had occurred the night before in Freetown,” police said in a release. “While at the home, he displayed a firearm in his waistband and threatened to shoot the man before police were called.”
Police said officers searched Chumack’s vehicle and found a 9mm handgun loaded with seven rounds beneath the driver’s seat. They said Chumack does not possess a license to carry.
Chumack was taken into custody and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, threats and carrying a firearm without a license among other charges.
Police said he already has several charges open in New Bedford District Court stemming from an incident in May in which he was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and allegedly found to be in possession of two rounds of ammunition.
A Jarred Chumack of New Bedford who is the same age was also arrested in May 2021 for a shots fired incident on Norwell Street in the city’s South End, in which he was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, multiple firearms offenses and motor vehicle offenses.
