Homeschool Day at the Whaling Museum

Homeschoolers aged 4-18 can visit at a discounted rate of $10 per student, $12 per adult, and children under the age of 3 are free.

Admission gives the homeschoolers access to museum exhibits, activities like the Inflatable Whale, Lagoda Below Deck, and other guided stations around the museum.

Special workshops are also available for $7 per student, and require pre-registration with a limited capacity of 18 students per session.

The museum encourages attendees to bring their own lunch to enjoy in the Harbor View Gallery.

"We know there are a lot of homeschooling families in the SouthCoast, so this is an opportunity for groups small and large to engage in a day of joyful learning and exploration at the Museum," said Victoria Hughes, the Associate Director of Museum Learning at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

What to Expect at Homeschool Day

Homeschool Day is a day of learning all about art, history, science, and culture with fun, hands-on activities.

For general admission activities, students will learn about similarities and differences between toothed and baleen whales in the Whales Today Exhibit. They will explore the lower deck of the Lagoda whaling ship and make a whaling logbook in the Voyage Around the World Exhibit.

For the special workshops, like the Squid Dissection Workshop, students will use dissecting tools to discover the unusual adaptations of squid. In the Research Room Workshop, students will explore whaling logbooks and other historic documents to learn how historians conduct primary source research.

And that’s not even the half of it.

A chance to explore all that the museum has to offer, with hands-on experiences, is happening Tuesday, April 1st.
