The Truth Behind That Giant Blue Structure in New Bedford Harbor

Every morning, commuters crossing the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge catch glimpses of the ever-evolving waterfront. Recently, I noticed a colossal blue structure that seemed to have popped up out of nowhere.

I needed answers because I’m nosy like that, so I reached out to one person I knew would have the answer. Jonathan Darling, New Bedford's public information officer, solved the mystery.

The structure? It's simple. According to Darling, we're looking at additional racks for storing wind turbine blades — an indicator of New Bedford's role in renewable energy, especially the Vineyard Wind project.

"They are on a barge right now near the bridge, but will be making their way to the marine commerce terminal site," Darling said.
