New Bedford Fire Claims the Lives of Five Dogs
Five dogs have died in a New Bedford house fire that engulfed a three-family residence that had a total of 23 dogs inside.
According to a Facebook post by the New Bedford Fire Department, firefighters responded to 60 Cove Street at 12:19 p.m. today for a report of a structure fire. Crews arrived to find flames coming from the building and tenants were attempting to rescue the 23 dogs inside the building.
One female tenant was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital, fire officials said, for possible smoke inhalation during the rescue attempt. One firefighter was also transported during the fighting of the fire for heat exhaustion.
Fire officials said that 15 dogs were found alive, five were found deceased, and three were unaccounted for at the time of the Facebook post, with crews still searching for the remaining dogs.
Eight adults and five children were displaced as a result of the fire, with the American Red Cross assisting them.
The cause of the fire has not been announced. The fire is currently being investigated by the New Bedford Fire Department Investigation Unit. Fire officials said there were working smoke alarms in the residence.
