New Bedford Fire Displaces 13 Residents

NEW BEDFORD — Over a dozen city residents have been displaced after a fire tore through their multi-family building in New Bedford yesterday.

According to the New Bedford Fire Department, no injuries were reported in the fire.

Fire crews were called out to the 126-128 Sycamore St. blaze just before noon on Tuesday.

The department said in a statement that the flames were already extending from the building's second floor into the attic when firefighters arrived.

The blaze also threatened an exposed residence a few feet away.

Crews first attacked the exterior fire before going inside to fight the flames on the second and third floors.

They managed to prevent it from spreading further, containing the fire to a second floor bedroom and limiting the adjacent building's damage to the exterior.

No residents were displaced in that home, the department noted.

Animal Control Officers rescued a dog from a first floor apartment in the first building.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced families.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
