NEW BEDFORD — Firefighters and other state and local crews spent hours on Friday morning cleaning up a fuel spill from a fishing boat in New Bedford harbor.

New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger said members of the city's fire department arrived at the scene behind the Crystal Ice building at around 8 a.m. Friday for the reported spill.

Around 20 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from an overfill line from the fishing vessel Three Sons, spreading from near Crystal Ice to the water around Fish Island, according to Kruger.

Fire crews from the department's marine unit and fireboat worked to mitigate the spill through Friday morning.

The chief said the department's Hazardous Materials Coordinator, Marine Safety Officer, and marine unit personnel were at the scene, along with Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection officials.

Crews from Frank Corporation, a New Bedford-based environmental services company that provides hazardous spill cleanup, also remained at the scene.
