New Bedford Woman Scores Recalled ‘Wicked’ Dolls With Adult Website Link Still on Box
A New Bedford woman scored a couple of wicked good collectibles in Dartmouth today – the controversial Wicked dolls that are being recalled by Mattel after the company inadvertently advertised an “adult” website on the back of the box.
The toy company made headlines this past weekend after the dolls should have linked to wickedmovie.com but instead linked to a site we can’t print here because we’re a family radio station. Let’s just say it's the type of content that would definitely have stars Cynthia Erivo or Ariana Grande singing, “I’m Not That Girl.”
Mattel issued a statement, saying “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this. Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.”
So when the local woman – we’ll call her “Dorothy” – happened upon one of the movie dolls while out shopping earlier today, she knew she had to buy it, even though she’s not a doll collector by any means.
“I saw the story on TikTok yesterday and saw Glinda at Target randomly very early this morning,” she said. “I texted my sister about it, told her I couldn’t believe I found one, and that I hoped I was going to be able to check out with it because I thought the Target computer might know about the recall and not let me buy it.”
Since it was so early, the self-checkout was not open yet, so she had to check out with an associate – but was able to buy the doll with no issues.
Meanwhile, her sister had Googled the dolls and texted Dorothy back to let her know Kohl’s had them in stock, too.
“When I got to Kohls, they had tons, but had Sharpied the website out and put a ‘Kohls’ sticker over the bottom of the box instead of pulling them – so they knew,” Dorothy said. “I was surprised they did that, knowing obviously very well that there was a recall.”
She bought an Elphaba doll from Kohl’s to complete her set.
“The sticker came right off,” she said. “Then, with some rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip, it cleaned up the Sharpie perfectly.”
To paraphrase that other Dorothy, guess there’s no place like Kohl’s.
