NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — Over 200 individuals experiencing homelessness on the SouthCoast were helped by an event earlier this week in New Bedford.

On October 23, Rise Up for Homes convened over 40 agencies and organizations in the New Bedford YMCA gym for the ninth annual New Bedford Connect event.

The one-day event brings together a wide variety of volunteers and services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness, all one single location. They were able to receive direct services on-site, free of charge.

Those services included free health screenings, haircuts and clothing from the event’s sponsors.

They were also provided breakfast, lunch, winter apparel, toiletries and other necessities, and a shuttle was available to bring them to the RMV to receive IDs.

“Homelessness is a complex issue that impacts those who are often characterized as an invisible part of our community,” said Robyn Branco, Chief Development Officer for YMCA Southcoast. “Anyone can find themselves experiencing homelessness at any time.

In addition, the YMCAs in New Bedford, Fall River and Wareham offer showers for homeless individuals; contact the branch for the days and hours when they are available.

“Collectively, as a community, we can provide our neighbors with resources and support equitably and respectfully,” Branco said.
