NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A new state-of-the-art playground has officially opened in New Bedford just in time for the new school year as students return to Carney Academy Elementary School.

Wednesday afternoon was exciting for Carney students, faculty and families as they welcomed their new playground with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Many gathered alongside school district and city leaders to celebrate the long-awaited renovations.

Students first inspired a group of teachers to organize and fundraise for a new playground to upgrade the existing one that was decades old and very small, and to have it be one that would be inclusive for all kids, regardless of physical limitations.

In January 2021, school counselor and playground committee lead Heather Macedo wrote to Mayor Jon Mitchell, who supported the idea, recommending resources to initiate the project.

"I am thoroughly impressed by the initiative of the students and teachers at Carney Academy to make this spectacular new playground a reality," Mitchell said. "They came up with the ideas and made it happen with sheer persistence. Students will now have a first-rate playground they can truly call their own."

In collaboration with other Carney teachers, Macedo led the fundraising charge. Their efforts, along with the support of the wider community, resulted in over $50,000 raised through hosting fundraisers, raffles and multiple golf tournaments.

Additionally, the project was awarded grant funding from the Community Preservation Act, the Community Development Block Grant, and the Carney Family Charitable Foundation. Through the various efforts, nearly $475,000 was invested to help bring this project to life.

Several months later, the playground is now officially open and ready to welcome kids as the school year approaches. Students won't be the only ones to enjoy the playground, either. It will also be a place for the whole community to come together and experience during non-school hours.

The 6,4000-square foot playground features multiple large-scale play modules designed for exercise and providing sensory play and discovery. It also has different climbing structures, slides and a swing set, promising endless fun and adventure for the children.

Although a recess break is already anticipated by kids during the school day, this new state-of-the-art playground will definitely add to the excitement.

Despite any physical limitations, there's something for every child to explore, promising a fun experience for everyone.
