NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford Police are investigating after shots were fired in the area of the Blue Meadows housing complex last night, and sources say the weapon used was one categorized as an assault weapon banned under Massachusetts law.

According to police, officers responded at about 11 p.m. to a ShotSpotter activation in the area of Matthew Street and Bluefield Street.

The investigation revealed that several vehicles were struck, and police said two gunshot victims arrived at St. Luke’s Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

WBSM’s Chris McCarthy confirmed with sources that an AR-15-style rifle was used in the shooting, with more than 30 rounds fired. McCarthy’s sources told him it was the first time a 5.56mm round has been found at the scene of a shooting in the city.

Police said the investigation is active at this time.
