New Bedford Airport Playground Reopens After Fire Scare
Great news parents and future pilots! The New Bedford Regional Airport has officially reopened its aviation-themed playground after a brief closure caused by a nearby fire.
On Monday, June 30, airport officials shared that the LCpl Matthew R. Rodriguez Playground is once again safe for families to enjoy. The area was temporarily shut down as a precaution after a fire on Shawmut Avenue displaced a number of critters. Out of concern for public health and safety, the City of New Bedford Health Department and airport management made the decision to temporarily restrict access.

A One-of-a-Kind Airport Playground
Located along the airport’s perimeter fence, the LCpl Matthew R. Rodriguez Playground is more than just a place to play; it’s a STEM-focused educational tool. Designed to spark an early interest in aviation, science, and engineering, the playground provides kids with a unique space to explore and learn in an airport setting.
The aviation-themed facility includes an air traffic control tower with lookouts, two slides, real wind socks and plenty of opportunities for hands-on discovery. Children ages 2-12 can enjoy the immersive experience while watching planes take off just beyond the fence.
Built through the efforts of the Atlantic Aviators organization, the playground was officially opened in November 2013.
Honoring a Local Hero
Here's a little background information: according to The Smiling Warrior, the playground is named in memory of LCpl Matthew R. Rodriguez, a United States Marine and New Bedford native who was killed in action in Afghanistan on December 11, 2013. His legacy lives on through the LCpl Matthew R. Rodriguez Memorial Foundation, which serves the community with the same commitment and patriotism Matthew gave to his country.
With the site now cleared and safe, New Bedford families can once again enjoy this local playground that blends fun, education and tribute in one special space.
