AHA Night in New Bedford is a monthly celebration of the city's art, history and architecture.

AHA Night falls on May 8 this month, featuring a host of mostly free activities for young and old. Executive Director Kim Goddard said AHA Night is serving as a kickoff for Art Week Southcoast, running from May 8 through May 18.

Goddard said the Waterfront Historic Area League (WHALE) has been at the center of preservation efforts in New Bedford for many years.

"They will debut their brand new, self-guided tour on May 8th which is supported by a app that the public can download," Goddard said. "It's debuting on AHA Night at the Selmar Eggers Building at 1 Johnny Cake Hill."

Goddard said the app will feature details on all of Whale's preservation efforts in the downtown area, all located within a walkable distance.

Goddard said AHA is also conducting its own tour of what she called the "hidden gems" on the AHA Night schedule, to help people who are unsure of what AHA is all about. The tour starts at 6 p.m. at Custom House Square.

Other highlights include waterfront tours of the historic schooner Ernestina-Morrissey and the New Bedford Public School Art show, featuring art work from elementary school students to high school. It's happening at the Paul Rodrigues Administration Building on County Street.

Also featured will be live music throughout the downtown: Americana music at Wings Court, electric blues and rock at the Pour Farm, and the Buttonwood Brass Band at the Harbor Hotel.

Also on the agenda will be several discussions about art, a Presentation on the Barnacle, a publication about fishing at the New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center and fun activities for children.

"AHA Night is a great way to start spring," Goddard said.
