New Bedford Antique Store Gets Mentioned in New York Magazine
It's not every day that a small local business in New Bedford gets mentioned by a world renowned artist in New York Magazine.
Let's first tell you a little bit about Acushnet River Antiques before we share how they ended up with a mention in such a big publication.
The store, currently owned and operated by two brothers Owen and Steve Thatcher and their wives Julie and Maria. The shop was opened in 1999 by the brothers' father Carl, who had been a longtime antique dealer. Carl passed away in 2012 and his wife Doreen took over for about 10 years, until she decided to retire and the brothers took over.
The showroom is pretty big, consisting over 18,000 square feet and currently featuring over 100 antique dealers from all over who maintain their own spaces.
When you walk in, you will find so many different types of antiques that the dealers have found at auction, estate sales, yard sales – you name it. The passion is very clear when you visit this showroom.
"It’s great when people come in and see something that they or their grandparents had when they were growing up," Owen said. "t’s like a museum of memories."
This year, the showroom will celebrate just over 25 years of being in business, and there's no better way to reinforce what they are doing than with a mention in a major publication.

So how did this New Bedford showroom end up in New York Magazine?
John Derian, a decorated New York artist, travels to Provincetown, where he also has a shop. Derian has been working in the art and collaboration space since 1989 and has developed products with Target and other popular home goods brands. He has also been featured in popular publications like CQ and Vogue, just to name a few.
It would only make sense that he would drop in occasionally to Acushnet River Antiques on his way to and from his Provincetown shop.
At one point he must have felt inspired and made a purchase of a bed at the showroom. It's the bed featured in this photo:
He mentioned where the bed was from in the New York Magazine feature; just a sentence or two, but still pretty notable.
If you want to make sure your home isn't cookie-cutter and has charm, then you should definitely take a look at Acushnet River Antiques on Instagram, or step into their showroom on Kilburn Street in New Bedford.
Even if you aren't in the market to buy anything, just stroll around and take a walk down memory lane.
