Monster Shark Tournament Returns to New Bedford Waterfront
The annual Monster Shark Tournament returns to the waters of New Bedford July 12.
The 32nd Annual Monster Shark Tournament is a non-profit event designed to bring awareness to the sustainability efforts of marine fisheries.
On Friday, July 13, the official Monster Shark Tournament weigh station will be set up on State Pier 3 in New Bedford. The public is welcome to watch the sharks get brought onto the pier between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, or 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday.
While it doesn't sound like something you'd bring kids to, many families in the past have attended the festival-style event. The weigh station is free to attend, and gives your shark-loving kiddos the chance to see a big shark up close, as scientists examine them and talk about their anatomy and how they interact with there surroundings.
In addition to the close-but-safe-encounter, kids will also enjoy face painting, shark games, shark trivia and photo ops.
Proceeds from the event have been donated to a number of organizations in the past, including the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy and Massachusetts Shark Research Program.
