There Are More Cameras on Interstate 195 Than You Think
Have you noticed? Or maybe you've felt it in your bones? You are being watched when you're driving on Interstate 195. Cameras now line the highway on 195 East and West.
The bulk of the web cameras in our area were installed over the past year, but the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has plans to install more, including in Dartmouth.

The purpose of the cameras is for observation of traffic volumes and roadway conditions during tough travel weather. The cameras can also be used by law enforcement and first responders during an emergency response.
Some of the cameras are online and available for viewing. The cameras can be viewed by going to mass511.com.

SouthCoast Traffic Cameras Installed
Here is a list of locations where cameras have been installed by MassDOT:
- 195 East by mile marker 19.2 in Dartmouth
- 195 East by mile marker 23.8 in New Bedford
- 195 East by mile marker 25.1 in New Bedford
- 195 West by mile marker 24.6 in New Bedford
Another Camera Coming Soon to Dartmouth
A spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has confirmed that a new camera will be installed this fall near mile marker 18.4 in Dartmouth.
The Reality of the Cameras
In reality, the cameras aren't going to have too much of an effect on our privacy while driving. The cameras aren't clear enough or close enough to the vehicles to pick up on license plates. They definitely can't see if you are texting and driving. Even if they could pick up these things, Massachusetts state law does not allow for the use of cameras for traffic violations.
