Massachusetts Hasn’t Elected a Native-Born Governor in Decades

It has been a long time since voters selected a Massachusetts native to hold the corner office on Beacon Hill, and it could be a while before they get the opportunity again.

The Last Native-Born Massachusetts Governor

The last elected Governor of Massachusetts who was a native of the state was Republican Paul Cellucci, born in Hudson, Massachusetts, in 1948.

Cellucci was elected governor in 1998 after serving as acting governor following the resignation of Republican Gov. William Weld. Weld wasn't from here either, having been born in Smithtown, New York, in 1945.

Recent Decades of Out-of-State Leadership

When Cellucci checked out early in 2001 to become ambassador to Canada, his Lt. Governor, Republican Jane Swift, a native of North Adams, Massachusetts, served as acting governor until 2003, when the Detroit-born Republican Mitt Romney was elected.

The Chicago-born Democrat Deval Patrick served two terms following Romney's one term in office. Republican Charlie Baker, born in Elmira, New York, succeeded Patrick, serving two terms.

Democrat Maura Healey, born in Maryland and raised in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 2022, after serving two terms as Attorney General. Though she attended college here, Healey did not establish permanent residency in Massachusetts until 1995.

Healey, who is seeking a second term as Governor of Massachusetts, faces a challenge from Republican Mike Minogue, a native of Georgia, who moved to Massachusetts in 2004.

Looking Ahead to Future Elections

It has been 28 years since Massachusetts voters elected a native-born governor. The next opportunity to vote for a Massachusetts native will be 2030, 32 years after the last Massachusetts native was elected governor.

Earlier this year, convention delegates and primary voters rejected Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Kennealy, who was born in Medford, Massachusetts, and raised in nearby Reading, and Brian Shortsleeve, who is listed in campaign material as a "Massachusetts native" with no specifics about where he was born and raised.

Shortsleeve reportedly lives in Osterville with a second home in Wellesley.
